Plein-air classes in Brisbane and Boonah region
Regular Plein-air sessions:
I run my plein-air painting classes in Brisbane, and in the Boonah/Mt Alford area. The sessions are themed (composition, aerial perspective, colour mixing etc.) and as always, are tailored to your needs and ability. Your paintings will be completed in oils, and pencil/charcoal when the need arises, often after a demonstration painting. Check below for a list of the materials you will need to bring with you. Classes run for three hours or so and cost $60.00 per session. If you don’t need tuition, come along and join our friendly group for $10 per session. Please contact me to let me know if you are coming.
Thank you,
Nick L

Materials list - Plein Air
Paints
Titanium White*, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson*, Burnt Sienna*, French Ultramarine*, Raw Umber*, Ivory Black*.
Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Viridian, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Prussian Blue, and Burnt Umber are all useful additions to your standard range of colours, but you don’t need to buy them all at once.
Langridge, Michael Harding, Gamblin or Winsor and Newton* are brands that I would suggest you purchase. Where marked with an asterisk*, Winton - a student quality paint- is a good and cheaper substitute.
Brushes
A selection of round and filbert bristle brushes will be useful. Mont Martre brushes or other brands of a similar quality are acceptable for a beginner. For more advanced students Rosemary and Neef make excellent brushes
Other materials
You will need a cheap wooden palette, ($5-10 from Artshed in West End), rags and paper towels, a palette knife (Art Spectrum No.2 is ideal). An 8x10 canvas board and gesso, A jam jar with a lid, gloves if desired, 500ml Odourless solvent - or gum turpentine. You might find that some Liquin or a lean painting medium will be useful.
Equipment hire
A complete set of oil paints and all of the other materials you will need is available for hire at $25.00 per session. Please let me know in advance if you need to use these.
Safety considerations
All types of paint use fundamentally the same pigments. Some of these pigments are poisonous and should be handled with care. Use gloves if you are concerned about contact with solvents or paints.
If you have any concerns about your ongoing contact with the materials commonly used by artists. it would be worth your while making a firm decision about your using them. These materials continue to be used because there are no suitable alternatives available.
The Australian sun can be vicious. it will be in your interest to wear a long sleeved shirt, a broad brimmed hat and SFP50+ sun block. Drink plenty of water too.
